a hymn project

I’ve been trying to memorize a lot of Scripture lately.  My mind is this crazy battlefield, and so many days I am certain that I am losing.  Miserably.  So to combat, I’m trying to constantly consume my thoughts with truth, truth, and more truth.

But I’ll confess, sometimes it’s hard to sit and just say Scripture over and over to myself.  A friend recommended an additional source of truth – hymns.

So I’ve decided to start memorizing those too – as in all the verses.  The theology is so good, and if I’m going to have a song stuck in my head, why not let the actual words roll around in there as well?  I picked this first one because, well, it’s easy 🙂 and the lyrics are really sweet.

Hymn #1: ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
Louisa M. R. Stead, 1882

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
Oh, for grace to trust Him more!

Oh, how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
And in simple faith to plunge me
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

I just bought this version to serenade us on our roadtrip to Bismarck for the weekend.  The video is lame, but you can listen to Page CXVI’s albums for free on Grooveshark.

  1. […] This project is fun!  I’m playing the piano more, and Hadley and I are walking around the house with the words stuck in our heads.  I’m afraid I’m tainting her by teaching her Page CXVI versions of the hymns, but they’re so beautiful and fun to listen to that I can’t resist. […]
